“At Kunjani we're all about a warm South African welcome, tasty food & luxury accommodation in the spectacular Cape Winelands.” Paul Barth & Pia Watermeyer. DID YOU KNOW THAT THE PETER PHAROAH FINE ART PRINT COLLECTION
IS AVAILABLE FOR SALE AT KUNJANI WINES IN STELLENBOSCH?
Kunjani Wines in Stellenbosch, South Africa combines traditional architecture with contemporary design and a distinctive African aesthetic. Haldane Martin was responsible for bringing together a collection of South African art and design, creating a new contemporary design landmark for the Western Cape that draws visitors as much for its striking design as its tasting experience with a view.
The centrepiece is the tasting and dining area, whose friendly atmosphere speaks to the greeting behind the Zulu word, Kunjani. Downstairs a cellar with tasting area showcases the wines on beautiful original leather and steel wine racks – a new design by Haldane Martin. The architecture’s Cape Dutch typology – laid out in an H-plan in the traditional Afrikaner style typical of the Cape winelands – was turned on its head by painting the building exterior charcoal (instead of white) and adding traditional slate stone cladding, with red sliding screens inspired by geometric patterns painted onto West African huts.
The space is furnished with original furniture designs by Haldane Martin, including the new Sim-Ply chair range, a folded steel lighting design, a Songololo Sofa, tetrahedral-based cafe tables and Zulu Mama chairs. Throughout the space notable South African design and art pieces including pieces by Peter Pharoah firmly root the design within its local context. Art pieces were selected and curated by Dani Diamond of PrimaGallerina.co.za
