Spotting a leopard in the wild is always a thrill, they are true masters of camouflage, and one of my favourite animals to encounter in the African bush. Hunting in the dappled shadows of early evening, relying on instinct and stealth, they are elusive, silent, and deadly. We were out on an evening game drive, almost ready to head back to camp when I mentioned to the ranger that it would be amazing to see a leopard, as we hadn’t had an encounter since a trip to Mkuzi in KwaZulu‑Natal back in 2008.
Unbelievably, just as we neared the camp gate, the driver suddenly stopped and reversed back down the winding road. Lifting his night light, he told us to look carefully into the bushes on our left. Lucky, lucky!! My wish was granted. A leopard stalking quietly alongside the road. We watched as he paused, crouching low, and blending into the undergrowth, barely visible. Cameras out, we snapped pics of him for a few more minutes but as the darkness deepened, he became harder to spot, and we eventually had to return to camp before the gates were locked for the night.
It was a spectacular moment, and we were fortunate to capture a few stunning images that inspired this artwork.
Although we never saw his prey, we hope his patience was rewarded with a satisfying dinner.
