Encountering the ghostlike figures of these enormous beasts is one of the most breathtaking experiences and should be at the top of everyone's bucket list.
The fact that elephants, that require so much water to live, can exist in the harsh climate of the Namibian desert has always been a source of wonder to me.
How can these incredible animals find water in a desert as old as time?
The Etosha pan is a massive salt pan, forming part of the Kalahari Basin in the north of Namibia and is a proclaimed national park where tourists flock to experience the wonders of this magical place.
For much of the year, the pan is dry and barren, it looks like a wasteland after an apocalypse but once a year, rain falls and the area is transformed into a verdant green wonderland. Although the water is too salty for most animals, it is a meeting place where they gather to mate bringing flamingos and pelicans by their 1000's. Black rhino, ostriches, and of course the iconic 'ghosts of Etosha; the elephants.
Wildebeest, gemsbok and zebra gather to graze and congregate at the pan and the entire area buzzes with renewed energy and vigour.
