PETER'S STYLE & TECHNIQUE
A painter's technique – the actual way in which he applies paint – can be as personal and distinctive as handwriting.
Peter Pharaoh's chosen medium, oils, are extremely flexible, allowing him to create surface textures ranging from porcelain smoothness to wildly expressive impasto (a term for thickly applied paint), using brushes, knives, or even fingers.
This personal 'handwriting'; is a very distinctive part of Peter Pharoah's style. His paintings are built up with a system of glazes.
A glaze is a transparent or semi-transparent layer of paint applied over another one in such a way that the lower one shows through to some extent. This can produce effects of great richness and depth of colour that cannot be achieved by simply mixing colours together.
To this rich and vibrant backdrop, opaque paint is lightly dragged or skimmed with the brush over a previous layer so that the lower layer is only partly covered and shows through irregularly. Taken together, these techniques allow him to create a vast range of colours and textural effects.
This unique and individualistic approach is a hallmark of Peter Pharoah's work, together with the richness and diversity of his subject, Africa, the land and its people provides a tapestry of contemporary art that both enthralls and inspires.'
